For as long as she can remember, Christen Austin has always had a passion for the visual arts. Much of her childhood was filled with the artistic influence of her mother who she would watch create intricate and detailed portraits with a single stippling pen. As a mainly self-taught artist, Christen has worked with a multitude of media such as graphite, colored pencil, pastel, pen and ink, watercolor, and more recently, acrylic paint. However, her subject matter of interest has never wavered. Much of her work is inspired by the beauty of the human facial structure and extends from the artistic movements of realism and surrealism with a focus on cultural representation and identity from the perspective of an African American woman.
Through art, Christen’s main goal is to provide imagery that embodies the beauty of African American culture and makes people feel empowered, represented, and understood. As she continues to develop as an artist, she hopes to create an expanded body of work that reflects how she views the world and her personal experiences as she seeks to influence and challenge how others view the world as well. Christen currently has several pieces displayed at Pasadena City College which is where she use to attend but has since graduated. She is now a student at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona where she majors in biology.
