My interest as an artist varies. No matter what medium, I choose, I’m often led by intuition or on a subconscious level. However, there are times when I may see a theme emerging and it is then I focus on that theme and develop it to its end. If this does not occur, I find myself on an exciting journey to see what unfolds. The creative process never ceases to amaze me. I purposely go outside of the box to create an interesting work of art. The artworks featured in this exhibit are Mixed Media Acrylics, Paintings on Silk, and Fiber Wall Hangings. Whatever creative direction chosen, the journey is a step-by-step development of shapes and colors, and most important, keeping a close eye on balance and composition.
When I’m in the mood to paint on silk, the tools needed such as the fabric, the resist (a substance that keeps the dye in place), and dyes are gathered. Whatever the subject matter, when my brush touches the silk and the vibrant dyes flow within the boundaries set by the resist, for me, it is truly a magical and captivating experience.
Regarding my fiber wall hangings, I have a long history of being around fabric. My mom was a seamstress and I have no doubt that much of what I learned was because of her. For years I made my own clothing and at one point in my life, I designed and made garments for a boutique in New York City. Within the past several years, my interest in working with fabric has evolved into finding new way of manipulating it. Instead of looking at fabric as a flat surface, I might roll it, weave it, twist it or tear it and take a totally unexpected direction. I find great joy in the creative process and hope that others appreciate my efforts.
